Bill Vickers, M.D.: Instructor, Racer
Bill is a 40 year old physician specializing in anesthesiology with interests in sports medicine, endurance training and physiology, and has attended ironman triathlon medical tent seminars. He currently is assistant vice president of a busy anesthesia practice and director of regional anesthesia.
His family of two children, wife, and dog reside in Annapolis, MD.
Bill has been involved in many competitive sports including crosscountry running, gymnastics, wrestling and sailboat racing leading to 3 National Titles. An olympic campaign was aborted because of medical school, and he began triathlon and biking to seriously get back in shape while rock/ice climbing or mountaineering during vacation to connect with the outdoors. Several overtaining injuries 2 yrs ago led to some serious time off of fast running, so long adventure racing became a nice diversion, but led to a passion. In addition, his mother taught orienteering, and he was a long distance sailing navigator, so adventure racing was an easy transition. Certainly, AR is now his favorite sport. His strengths are pretty balanced but he mostly enjoys nav, biking and paddling. His greatest joy is exposing his family to the outdoors while hiking, swimming, racing, or doing orienteering with them. He typically takes his 5 year old son out kayaking in a tandem while training.
Current accomplishments 2005:
- 2nd place overall, Delaware half ironman Aquabike
- 1st place, Wye Island Kayak Regatta (set new course record in tandems with Josh Jacobs, brotherinlaw)
- 1st place orienteering MD, MI
- 1st place Vasa CrossCountry Skiing
- Ski Mountaineering and Avalance Course Pacific NW and Cascades with AAI
- Completed 15+ AR races in 2005
- Top 3 in 10 races including
Trioba Sprint Durango 12 hour Yough Extreme 12 hr Rocky Gap AR
The Savage Sprint Tidewater Traverse 12 hour
- Competed in NGAR, Swomp Stomp, NH 24hr, Fall Smar, Spring Rogaine
His teams current goals are having fun while being seriously competitive. He plans on racing in several solo and team AR events in 2006 and is training for the 2006 US Surfski Champs and likely Jay Challenge.
