Andrew Jacobs: AR Instructor, Racer
"For me, it's all about being outside: both outside in its general sense and also outside one's comfort zone. The further behind you leave the confines of day-to-day experience, the greater the reward upon your return. Adventure racing combines physical challenge with an unsurpassed level of exposure. On another (not so philosophical level) you get to run in the woods with your buds for a few days; what's not to love about that?"
Andrew has arrived at multi-disciplinary endurance sports by way of a sequence of participatory and competitive sporting interests. In England he played Rugby at national schools level before switching to rowing crew. After moving to the US in 1987 he took up rock climbing and immediately found a passion for long traditional routes. Significant ascents include Whitney direct and East Buttress of El Capitan. A road cycling interest lead to solo North-South and West-East traverses of the US. Running has been an element of all of his training and Andrew has completed several marathons and ultra distance events. Since his first AR race in 1999, he has participated in numerous events from sprint (e.g. Blue Ridge, Hi-Tec etc.) to expedition (e.g. The Beast and Eco-challenge). That original race was also when Andrew and Jono, aka Hairy Scary, first teamed up and since then Hairy Scary Evolutions have been a fundamental foundation of his AR training.
Likes: sweating outside and cultivating foul personal odors (it's the European in me!), the company of competitive and enthusiastic athletes (of all levels), strong coffee in the morning and most of all, of course, sharing adventures with my family.
